The Skinny On Xbox One

As was promised by Microsoft, the details on the new gaming console are out.
The new console, previously referred to by most as Xbox 720 (or by others under the codename, Durango), will be called Xbox One, and will release this holiday season. To cut right to what we were all worried about (or was it just me?), Xbox One will not require "always-on" internet connection to play games. (Phew!) Xbox One is also reported to not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games. Xbox One includes 8GB of RAM, an 8-Core CPU, a 500GB HDD, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI in and out ports, USB 3.0, and 802.11n wireless with Wi-Fi Direct. Microsoft states that Xbox One has "variable power states" and "practically silent operation." Microsoft also claims that the system is so powerful that users will be able to "switch instantly" between games and internet browsing, or other functions, via the Xbox One Architecture: a combination of the Xbox OS and Microsoft Kernel OS. And by "instantly" and "no waiting" Microsoft boasted that switching to a game will be like switching TV channels.

Xbox One will also ship with the new Kinect (some call it the Kinect 2.0), which IGN reports to have a 1080p camera and a 60% better field of view. It can recognize facial expressions, recognize up to six individuals (eliminating the need to log in), and even detect biometrics and detect "the slightest rotation of a wrist or shoulder," according to Microsoft. IGN also reports that Xbox One requires the Kninect to function, but Microsoft assures that performance will not suffer in smaller rooms. If the information on the new Kinect is true, then Microsoft should not have a problem delivering on that promise.

While Xbox One will not require always-on internet, sources at Kotaku state that publishers may release online-only games, utilizing cloud processing via Microsoft Azure, which would require a constant connection to play those games.

Lastly, Xbox One will have 15 exclusive titles in its first year, including Quantum Break and Forza Motorsport 5. Eight of those game are promised to be from all-new franchises, Quantum Break being one of them.

That's all I have time for now, LJ gamers.
Keep Calm and Game On

Game of the Month: Challenge Failure

So I failed to finish either game, After buying both and attempting to get somewhere with something. So I'm gonna mark this down and try and move on. That's 0/2 so far and still 7 more months til the end of the year to make it go up somehow. Now I wanna try a game I will probably get somewhere in, but has an ending, so that puts both Terraria, and Monster Hunter out the window (which are games I've been actively playing this month with interest.)

I can't wait for them to confirm always online and get shit fucked because of their hubris.
The Next Xbox Will Require an Internet Connection To Start Games, Sources Say

Two Kotaku sources have added more credence to the rumor that the next Xbox, expected to battle the PlayStation 4 in late 2013 or early 2014, will be an always-online system, though it will be able to tolerate dropped connections. “Unless something has changed recently,” one of the sources told us over email, “Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used.”

Durango is the codename for the next-gen Xbox. “If there isn’t a connection, no games or apps can be started,” the source continued. “If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time - currently three minutes, if I remember correctly - the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”

The PS4 will not require an online connection to start or run games, Sony has confirmed. No gaming console ever has.

Edge is reporting new details on the next Xbox system. The biggest news about the new console: internet is required to play with the system and used games will be blocked.

Games will be purchased with one-time-use activation codes, meaning the sole person who uses the code first is the only person who can play the game on their console.

While the console’s experience now fully lies with internet compatibility, physical games will still be available. Games will now be on blu-ray format for the next Microsoft console, meaning 50 gigs of space for games now.

The console holds AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The console will also ship with a newer version of the Kinect.

SOURCE: 1, 2

Game of the Month Challenge status

I decided it was kinda unfair to have 2 games for a month anyway so I'm going into overtime with them, specially Blood Omen, as I really want to see that to the end at least.

In IRL (BECAUSE YOU GUYS LOVE ME OFFLINE RIGHT?) news: one of my best friends got married and that's largely why I have not done anything for a week (apparently helping out with a wedding on a budget requires lots of manual cheap labor from friends,) I had to participate in his wedding and socialize.

New to a series: Should you play the older games?

With so many successful game series out there, some with over 3 titles in the franchise, how do you know if you should play the older games or perhaps even start at the beginning?

The quick and easy answer: It depends on the game.

Let's face it, not all flagship game series are fantastic from the first title to the last. Not to mention that a series might be so old that some of the earlier games might be from the previous generation of consoles. Furthermore, an earlier game title may not be essential to the ongoing story of the game series. You need to do some research and weigh the pros and cos.

For example, I am a huge fan of both the God of War and Assassin's Creed series, but I would recommend someone to start with the first God of War, and skip the first Assassin's Creed. The original God of War is, in short, stellar. In God of War II, Kratos lacks some character development, but the game is still great and essential to the story in God of War III. While the first two titles were exclusive to the Playstation 2, newcomers can also now enjoy them on the Playstation 3. Assassin's Creed debuted on the PS3, but this doesn't compensate for it's faults. Combat feels like a "button masher" until you can perform combo kills. While this greatly improves game play, many people I've talked to still felt missions were rather repetitive: get new target at Masyaf, go to a specific city, kill target, return to Masyaf, rinse and repeat. However, Assassin's Creed II was such an all-around improvement that I thought, "This is everything the first game could have been." And since Assassin's Creed is summarized in the beginning of Assassin's Creed II, one can start with AC2; and I always recommend that newcomers do so. As for the later games, they are important to the series' story line. I also loved the fact that new abilities gained throughout previous games (double hidden blades, assassin flags, etc.) returned and built upon each other with each game rather than be replaced or forgotten like many of the powers in the God of War series. And while the previous four AC games are very briefly summarized in Assassin's Creed III, it's so brief that I feel one looses out on the depth of the story.

In short- and as for all games- if you're interested in getting into a new series, do your homework. Look up some reviews and ask around to find out if the game is likely to be worth your time and fulfill your interests. Don't play something if it's only going to frustrate you. If a game sounds like a bad time but you need it only for the story, Google or Wikipedia that stuff and skip to the good games.

Keep Calm and Game On

So, gamers... I love Skyrim. Where should I start in the Elder Scrolls series?

From the People who brought you Bastion comes Transistor

<lj-embed id="812" />

Oh man, I have not even finish Bastion yet.

We are very, very excited to reveal today a new game we’ve been working on here at Supergiant, a science-fiction-themed action RPG we’re calling Transistor. We’ll have an early build playable this week at PAX East at our booth #892, and right now, we have our reveal trailer! Check it out and read on.

Transistor invites players to wield an extraordinary weapon of unknown origin as they explore a stunning futuristic city. We’re designing our next game to seamlessly integrate thoughtful strategic planning into a fast-paced action experience, complete with our studio’s signature melding of responsive gameplay and rich atmospheric storytelling. All of us from the Bastion development team are working together again on this new project, with the aid of a handful of talented new people who’ve joined us since Bastion’s launch.

In Transistor, players assume the role of a young woman who gains control of a powerful weapon after a mysterious group of assailants nearly kills her with it. Now she must fight from street to street against forces that will stop at nothing to recover the weapon. During the course of the adventure, players will piece together the Transistor’s mysteries as they pursue its former owners.
We expect Transistor to be released in early 2014. We have not yet decided on which platform or platforms the game will be available for.

We know you’ll have a lot of questions about Transistor, so we’ll be putting together a FAQ that addresses them, as well as answering more via Twitter and Facebook — and in person at PAX East this week! And now that the cat’s out of the bag, we’ll be keeping you posted on how development is coming along in the weeks and months to come. We can’t wait to hear what you think!

http://supergiantgames.com/?p=1816

Left 4 Dead 2 infects Resident Evil 6 with special crossover for PC Gamers

Capcom and Valve are pleased to announce the Resident Evil® 6 x Left 4 Dead 2 project.

This crossover project between two of the interactive entertainment industry’s most respected publishers will see characters from Left 4 Dead™ 2 featured exclusively in the forthcoming PC version of Resident Evil® 6, while enemies from Resident Evil 6 will invade the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2. All content will be made available completely free for fans of either game to access and play.

Owners of Resident Evil 6 PC will be able to select one of four survivors from Left 4 Dead 2’s iconic cast – Coach, Nick, Ellis and Rochelle – when playing PC exclusive mode, The Mercenaries No Mercy. Each character will have a special customized weapon load-out created just for use in Resident Evil 6. In addition to the four survivors, two of the infamous Special Infected zombies from the Left 4 Dead franchise – the Witch and Mini Tank – will also make a cameo appearance in this mode, relentlessly attacking players regardless of whether a character from Left 4 Dead 2 or Resident Evil 6 is chosen. This new and exclusive content will automatically be downloaded in the background to all owners of the PC version of Resident Evil 6 from April 5.

<lj-embed id="811" />

Making the leap to the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be some of Resident Evil 6’s most fearsome enemies – Lepotitsa, Napad and Ogroman. All three characters were brought to life in Left 4 Dead 2 by Valve’s renowned developers using its Steam Workshop tools. Owners of the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be able to face a new deadly challenge when Resident Evil 6 characters infect Valve’s classic zombie title this spring.

Commenting on the crossover project, Chet Faliszek from Valve stated: “We’re huge Resident Evil fans, so when the opportunity arose to work directly with Capcom to combine L4D2 and RE6, we jumped at it.”

Resident Evil 6 Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added: “The Resident Evil 6 team really enjoyed working on this crossover, and we’re confident that our fans will have a great time with it too! We hope you enjoy this unique content.”

About Capcom
Capcom is a leading worldwide developer, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment for game consoles, PCs, handheld and wireless devices.
Game of the Month Challenge Update

Well Guys let me tell ya, right after Chapter 2 I think all my interest in the game dropped like a rock. I got out of prison. Seigfried is the surprise character who is actually doing some good out of everybody else I've encountered, but dialogue choices up the ass, and having to figure stuff out and be here and there at specific times is becoming dull.

I'll probably be playing Blood Omen early next week because that at least seems more functional to me than The Witcher.

Here’s Anita Sarkeesian’s First ‘Tropes vs. Women In Games’ Video

<lj-embed id="809" />

It's been a long road for feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian. Last summer, she ran a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for a new video series examining sexist tropes in video games—her goal was $6,000 and she raised nearly $160,000. In the midst of the Kickstarter drive, Sarkeesian was subjected to a brutal, organized harassment campaign (someone even made an online game that simulated punching her in the face), all of which drew even more attention to her project.

As Sarkeesian explained to Kotaku, the extra funding gave her the opportunity to increase the scope and scale of the project, but it's also meant a lot more work, and some delays. She's now released the first episode in the series, which takes a look at the "Damsel in Distress" trope. Certainly a prevalent trope, that one.

Sarkeesian has already launched a tumblr to highlight many examples of this particular trope, and this video will take a deeper look. Give it a watch. [SOURCE]

New informations about "Assassin's Creed IV"

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has been officially unveiled by Ubisoft, along with several new details about the new game, which will see players take on the role of a pirate in the early eighteenth century.

Black Flag's main character is Edward Kenway, the father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor Kenway from Assassin's Creed III. A pirate -cum-assassin operating in the Caribbean in 1715, Kenway commands a ship called the Jackdaw, and is joined on board by several key figures from pirate history including Charles Vane, "Calico" Jack Rackham, Anne Bonny and the notorious Blackbeard.

Ubisoft has said that it wants to dissect the Hollywood-ised, sensational image of pirating's golden age, and explore the flawed, human aspect of these characters more closely.

Black Flag will also let players explore the Caribbean of the eighteenth century, with 50 separate locations set to feature in the game. These include cities like Havana and Kingston, as well as jungles, abandoned forts and even underwater sections. Assassin's Creed IV will do away with the teleporting system that featured in previous Assassin's Creed games, allowing players to seamlessly transition from place to place, boats to land.

Similar to Grand Theft Auto IV, you will be able to travel the entire world of Black Flag with only minimal load times, meaning you board your ship in Kingston, sail the entire length of the Caribbean Sea and disembark in Havana without any stoppages.

The naval combat from Assassin's Creed III will naturally return as a large part of Black Flag and has been tweaked and optimised to suit the pirate era. Your ship will be fully customisable, and you will be able to use a spyglass to scout other ships on the ocean, before boarding them with your crew and plundering them for loot.

So far, during the on-land sections, Black Flag looks similar to previous Assassin's Creed games, and will see you sneaking across rooftops to reach your assassination targets. However, Ubisoft has said that Edward Kenway's fighting style will differ from characters in previous games and focus more on dirty tactics and improvised weapons.

The present day setting will also return from previous Creed games, though will not feature Desmond Miles. Instead, Ubisoft said, players will play as "themselves" investigating the history of Edward Kenway from the series' iconic Abstergo Labs. No other details than that are available right now.

Black Flag's multiplayer is also shrouded in mystery for the moment, though Ubisoft has promised it will feature new maps, characters and game modes.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set to launch in the autumn of 2013, and will be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and the PlayStation 4, which was recently announced by Sony and will also launch later this year.

src

Kotaku.com reports: "Assassin’s Creed IV Is Out October 29 via Leaked Trailer (SPOILERS)

UbiSoft seems to be intentionally spreading the "leaked" news about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag like a kid willing to share their bags of candy. If not, whomever's doing it ought to be fired at this point after releasing what is primarily a substantial bit of information on the video game before the allotted Monday announcement.

<lj-embed id="806" />

Via GamesRadar, this is the leaked first trailer for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. In the trailer, a grizzled pirate describes Captain (and assassin) Edward Kenway.

"There was a time I thought myself the deadliest scourge of these seas," the pirate says. "But this man..." We then see Kenway hacking, slashing, and doing his assassin thing. The trailer ends on a silhouette of Kenway.

At the end of the trailer, we see a slide saying Assassin's Creed IV will be out October 29 and that it's "also coming on next-gen consoles." Logos on the bottom: PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC. We'll have more on Assassin's Creed IV this Monday. [SOURCE]

I'm probably looking forward to it even less now after seeing this trailer. Edward Kenway seems to be very a retread of Ezio Auditore (or at the very least the parts I disliked about the character; womanizing, made worse when I saw the Woman of Color appear from behind the white chick. Considering the era he's in, that's not the first impression I wanted to see in regards to race or women in general.) Considering the nature of this news, the trailer is bound to disappear a few times on TY before its actually allowed to remain on one of the more official gaming site accounts. Have fun hunting it down if this one disappears.
